Guillermo del Toro ha prodotto Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark insieme a Jason Brown e Sean Daniel della The Sean Daniel Company e a Elizabeth Grave della 1212 Entertainment. La prima stesura dell’adattamento seguiva le vicende di un gruppo di giovani alle prese con i loro peggiori incubi ed era stata firmata da Marcus Dunstan e Patrick Melton (Saw – L’Enigmista).
