È stata presentata parte della lista nella categoria Miglior Film Straniero per 85° Edizione degli Oscar. La selezione finora include voci di alto profilo e in concorso nei festival di quest’anno, tra cui Michael Haneke Amour (Austria), Cate Shortland Lore (Australia), di Christian Petzold Barbara (Germania), Cristian Mungiu Beyond The Hills (Romania) e Kim Ki-duk,  il recente vincitore del Festival del Cinema di Venezia, con Pietà (Corea del Sud). Ancora nessun nome da parte del cinema Italiano ma la selezione è ancora lunga.
Lo scorso anno, la categoria ha premiato il film iraniano A Separation vincitore anche del festival di Berlino. L’Accademia annuncerà l’elenco completo delle proposte ammissibili nel mese di ottobre 2012. Nove finalisti tra le decine di voci saranno selezionati a metà gennaio, con gli ultimi cinque candidati che saranno annunciati il 24 gennaio 2013. Qui sotto la lista dei film per ora passati alla selezione:
