Copia originale, basato sulle memorie di Lee Israel, ha battuto nella stessa categoria, Black Panther, Se la strada potesse parlare, A Star Is Born e BlacKkKlansman. Quest’ultimo dovrebbe essere il frontrunner di categoria agli Oscar 2019, ma questa vittoria mescola le carte in tavola, proiettando anche il premio alla sceneggiatura come uno dei più incerti di questa edizione degli Academy Awards.

Bo Burnham ha invece vinto per Eight Grade con grande sorpresa e con grande merito. La concorrenza sbaragliata era formata da: Roma, Vice, A quiet Place e Green Book. Quest’ultimo è considerato il front-runner di categoria per gli Oscar, ma, come per la categoria “non originale”, anche in questo caso la questione si apre.

Lo scorso anno, Jordan Peele per Get Out e James Ivory per Chiamami col tuo nome hanno portato a casa i WGA di categoria e anche i rispettivi Oscar. Chissà se quest’anno il risultato sarà conforme e quindi i due outsider prenderanno il posto dei favoriti o se l’Academy rimarrà “conservatrice”.

Continua la Season Award, assegnati nella notte anche i WGA Awards, i premi dell’associazione degli sceneggiatori Hollywoodiani. Ebbene a trionfare per il cinema, miglior adattamento va a Billy Ray per Captain Phillips – Attacco in mare aperto, mentre il premio come miglior sceneggiatura originale come prevedibile va a Her di Spike Jonze. Esclusi dalla categoria miglior adattamento però 12 Years a Slave e Philomena non potevano essere nominati al WGA che sono invece tra i possibili vincitori per l’Oscar.

La gilda degli sceneggiatori di Hollywood ha annunciato le nomination ai WGA 2023. Le cinquine hanno riservato diverse sorprese, differenziandosi molto da quello che invece hanno deciso e annunciato gli Oscar 2023 ieri.

WGA 2019: le nomination del sindacato degli sceneggiatori

Dopo i Golden Globes 2019 (tutti i vincitori qui), la stagione dei premi è ufficialmente entrata nel vivo, e mentre aspettiamo le nomination agli Oscar 2019, che verranno annunciate il 22 gennaio prossimo, ecco in arrivo l’elenco dei titoli che concorreranno per i WGA 2019, il premio del sindacato degli sceneggiatori che assegna il proprio riconoscimento alla migliore sceneggiatura originale, alla migliore sceneggiatura non originale e alla migliore sceneggiatura da documentario.

WGA 2018: vincono Get Out e Chiamami col tuo Nome

Sono stati assegnati i Writers Guild Awards 2018 e, a sorpresa, Scappa – Get Out ha conquistato il premio per la migliore sceneggiatura originale. Il film di Jordan Peele ha sbaragliato la concorrenza dei favoriti The Shape of Water e soprattutto di Tre Manifesti a Ebbing, Missouri.

Per quanto riguarda invece la categoria per la migliore sceneggiatura non originale, il premio è andato al novantenne James Ivory, per Chiamami col tuo nome.

Il premio, per Peele, potrebbe significare un grande passo verso l’Oscar a discapito di Tre Manifesti a Ebbing, Missouri, considerato il front-runner per il premio alla sceneggiatura a Martin McDonagh. Tuttavia, questo risultato potrebbe ripercorrere quello che è accaduto lo scorso anno, nella categoria degli script, quando i WGA premiarono Moonlight su La la Land, il favorito ai blocchi di partenza, ma che poi vinse la statuetta di categoria agli Oscar (dove però Moonlight concorreva in sceneggiatura non originale).

Per quanto riguarda la categoria di sceneggiature adattate, i WGA 2018 hanno premiato James Ivory e Chiamami col tuo nome ad appena 24 ore di distanza dal USC Libraries Scripter Award. Storicamente questo tandem è imbattibile.

Un po’ a sorpresa, i WGA 2017 hanno premiato Moonlight e Arrival per le migliori sceneggiature cinematografiche dell’anno. In realtà non sorprende il premio ad Arrival per il miglior script adattato, ma Moonlight è riuscito a vincere contro lo stra-favorito La La Land, per la migliore sceneggiatura originale, il che dà al film di Barry Jenkins qualche chance in più in categoria agli Oscar 2017.

La Weta Digital ha pubblicato il nuovo showreel aziendale, aggiornato agli ultimi lavori prodotti e, tra i più noti, spiccano anche Avengers: Endgame e Game of Thrones. La società di effetti visivi nacque nel 1993, e il suo primo lavoro fu Creature del Cielo, film di Peter Jackson che infatti fu trai fondatori del gruppo.

Nel corso degli anni, la Weta ne ha fatta di strada, arrivando ai vertici delle produzioni cinematografiche di tutto il mondo e conquistando numerosi premi tra Oscar, Bafta e VES Award. Trai suoi film più premiati ci sono Il Signore degli Anelli, King Kong, Avatar, Il Pianeta delle Scimmie e Il Libro della Giungla.

Da poco la Weta Digital ha celebrato 25 anni e in questa occasione ha diffuso un nuovo showreel in cui sono inclusi i suoi ultimi lavori, tra cui Endgame e Alita: l’angelo della battaglia, ma anche i prodotti televisivi come The Umbrella Academy e Game of Thrones.

Peter Jackson si sta dedicando all’animazione. La società di effetti speciali del regista, Weta Digital, sta lanciando una divisione d’animazione. Il veterano del settore Prem Akkaraju fungerà da amministratore delegato. La società con sede in Nuova Zelanda ha dichiarato che la creazione di una divisione che si occuperà solo di animazione era un sogno di Jackson e Fran Walsh, che scriveranno, produrranno e dirigeranno diversi progetti animati per l’azienda. I dettagli di tali progetti non sono stati resi noti.

“Siamo grandi fan della narrazione animata in tutte le sue forme, ma può essere un modo lungo, lungo e spesso costoso di fare film – ha dichiarato Jackson in una nota – Questo è, in parte, il motivo per cui abbiamo creato questa società – per cambiare il modello e aprire le porte a registi e narratori che altrimenti non avrebbero avuto la possibilità di mostrare cosa possono fare.” Weta Animated lavorerà in tandem con la Weta Digital per l’industria cinematografica e televisiva e inizierà a produrre contenuti originali per la prima volta nei suoi 25 anni di storia.

Weta Digital si dà all’animazione

La compagnia ha inaugurato la sua attività nel 1994, con Creature dal Cielo, film di Peter Jackson. Con uno staff composto da 1.550 artisti e ingegneri, Weta Digital ha vinto sei Oscar per gilm effetti visivi, 10 Oscar Sci-Tech e sei BAFTA Awards nella stessa categoria. Tra i progetti più importanti ricordiamo Avatar, La trilogia de Il Signore degli Anelli, Avengers: Infinity War, Avengers: Endgame, Game of Thrones, Ad Astra e i prossimi progetti Mulan e Black Widow.

“Weta Digital ha iniziato con una macchina da presa e un solo artista che insieme hanno creato gli effetti digitali in Creature dal Cielo – ha affermato Walsh – Nessuno di noi sapeva cosa stessimo facendo, ma anche in quei primi giorni potevamo vedere l’incredibile potenziale di questa nuova tecnologia. Da allora, quello dei VFX è diventato un enorme settore, ma il nostro obiettivo è rimasto lo stesso: dare vita alle storie, attraverso il potere dell’immaginazione. Se puoi sognarlo, possiamo crearlo.”

Adesso non resta che ammirare le meraviglie che la Weta Digital riuscirà a portare a compimento anche nel campo dell’animazione.

Westworld: recensione della serie di Jonathan Nolan e J.J. Abrams

I wonder if I’ve been changed in the night? Let me think: was I the same when I got up this morning? I almost think I can remember feeling a little different. But if I’m not the same, the next question is, Who in the world am I?

Mi chiedo se durante la notte io sia cambiata? Riflettiamo: ero la stessa quandomi sono svegliata stamattina? Mi sembra di ricordare di sentirmi diversa. Ma se non sono la stessa, la domanda successiva è, Chi sono io in questo mondo?

Sono le parole tratte da Alice nel paese delle meraviglie lette dall’androide Dolores Abernathy, (Evan Rachel Wood), in un incontro con uno dei suoi creatori in Westworld, la serie scritta fra gli altri da Jonathan Nolan e prodotta da J.J. Abrams (in onda dal 2 ottobre prossimo sulla HBO). Questo frammento dell’opera di Lewis Carroll, rappresenta una delle diverse chiavi di lettura, la paura del cambiamento e la sua necessità, di questo tv show che prende origine dal romanzo di Michael Cricthon regista anche dell’omonimo film del 1973 (titolo italiano, Il mondo dei robot). Westworld, ambientata in un futuro prossimo, racconta di un parco divertimenti, un mondo parallelo simile al “Vecchio West” ma popolato da androidi che, costruito da un gruppo di scienziati e di uomini di marketing, vuole offrire al genere umano una vacanza alternativa.

Westworld: nuovo affascinante promo della serie evento HBO

Se il confronto uomo-macchina può essere scontato, molto attuale è la ribellione di un “popolo” (di robot) sotto il controllo degli uomini, capace di intravedere nel cambiamento la libertà, al contrario dell’ottusità dell’essere umano che il cambiamento e la salvezza li ricercano nella finzione. Dolores è il segnale debole di questa mutazione, che fa immaginare un lento e inesorabile risveglio delle coscienze sotto gli occhi di chi li ha creati. Sono poi numerosi i riferimenti al turismo sessuale, alla violenza gratuita e al maltrattamento delle altre specie.

In un certo senso Westworld mette davanti agli occhi dello spettatore, con un approccio mainstream, un Far West del terzo millennio. Il budget produttivo, a differenza di quello a disposizione di Chricton nel 1973 (1.2 milioni di dollari per 30 giorni di riprese), è cospicuo, 54 milioni di dollari, e il cast a disposizione altisonante (oltre a Evan Rachel Wood ci sono Ed Harris, Anthony Hopkins), e una sceneggiatura costruita con grande abilità trasformano questa storia di fantascienza in una serie di alto storytelling.

La serialità (se “televisiva” si può ancora chiamare) continuerà a sorprendere quanto più riuscirà a scavare nella società, in ciò che viviamo nel quotidiano, intrattenendo. The Walking Dead si confronta con la sopravvivenza, House of Cards con il potere, Game of Thrones non è lontano da una Champions League. E Westworld ci mette di fronte a noi stessi, spesso incapaci di godere il presente e restii ad affrontare il futuro.

Il mondo dei robot (Westworld) è un film del 1973 scritto e diretto da Michael Crichton. Precursore del tema della macchina che si ribella all’uomo, viene da molti considerato un cult e contiene delle autocitazioni di Yul Brynner (che, nella parte del Pistolero, indossa nel film gli stessi abiti di scena da egli stesso usati nel 1960 per I magnifici sette). Il mondo dei robot viene sovente accreditato come il primo film realizzato anche con l’ausilio della grafica computerizzata per i suoi effetti speciali. Si ritiene inoltre che proprio in questo film sia stata usata per la prima volta la definizione di virus in relazione al malfunzionamento della rete di computer. Il film ebbe un seguito tre anni dopo, Futureworld – 2000 anni nel futuro diretto da Richard T. Heffron.

Westworld – stagione 5: Jonathan Nolan spera di poter finire la serie HBO

Jonathan Nolan nutre ancora speranze per Westworld. Nolan e la co-creatrice Lisa Joy avevano progettato di realizzare una quinta e ultima stagione di Westworld. Tuttavia, la HBO ha cancellato l’ambiziosa serie fantascientifica dopo quattro stagioni nel novembre 2022. Come se non bastasse, un mese dopo la HBO ha rimosso Westworld da Max per ridurre i costi.

Perché Jonathan Nolan vuole realizzare la quinta stagione di Westworld?

Il futuro della quinta stagione di Westworld è incerto. Tuttavia, Nolan rimane ottimista sul fatto che la serie avrà un finale adeguato. Alla domanda di The Hollywood Reporter sul finale originale previsto per Westworld, Nolan ha sottolineato il suo desiderio di “finire la storia“.

“Sì, al 100%”, ha detto Jonathan Nolan quando gli è stato chiesto se ha intenzione di realizzare il finale originale di Westworld. “Siamo dei completisti. Mi ci sono voluti otto anni e un cambio di regista per realizzare Interstellar. Vorremmo finire la storia che abbiamo iniziato“.

Il fatto che la HBO abbia tolto la serie a Max non ha disturbato Jonathan Nolan. È “orgoglioso” di ciò che hanno realizzato. Tuttavia, Jonathan Nolan desidera ancora completare la serie.

“In termini di completamento della storia, capisci che hai il tempo che hai, a volte è quanto vuoi, a volte no“, ha aggiunto Jonathan Nolan. “Sono fottutamente orgoglioso di quello che abbiamo realizzato. È stata un’esperienza straordinaria. Penso che sarebbe un errore guardare indietro e provare solo rammarico [per come è finita]. Ma c’è ancora molto desiderio di finirlo“.

Westworld è andato in onda per quattro stagioni sulla HBO dal 2016 al 2022. La stagione 1 di Westworld ha fatto registrare i massimi ascolti per la HBO. Tuttavia, a partire dalla seconda stagione Westworld ha iniziato a declinare dal punto di vista critico. Candidato a 54 Emmy, Westworld ne ha vinti nove, tra cui quello per l’attrice non protagonista in una serie drammatica a Thandie Newton nel 2018.

Era il 2008 quando Vivienne chiese a Josh Homme (Queens of the Stone Age) e Unkle di collaborare a una canzone rap scritta da lei per sensibilizzare l’opinione pubblica verso tematiche vicine all’organizzazione Liberty. Nel frattempo io stavo iniziando la mia carriera come regista, girando video musicali per band rock e, quando mi chiesero di fare delle riprese per il videoclip, incontrai Vivienne, con cui presto diventai amica.

Dopo aver concluso nel 2013 il film sulla moda RED SHOES, interpretato da Lily Cole, per Climate Revolution e aver lavorato a una serie di cortometraggi su Vivienne Westwood per la sezione Takeover di Dazed, le ho proposto di collaborare a un documentario su di lei ed è così che WESTWOOD: PUNK, ICONA, ATTIVISTA ha avuto origine.

Durante questi tre anni in cui abbiamo girato il film, siamo riusciti a riprendere diversi aspetti della vita di Vivienne: abbiamo trascorso del tempo con lei al Circolo Polare Artico per la missione di sensibilizzazione di Greenpeace verso i pericoli del cambiamento climatico, negli stessi mesi ci siamo immersi in rotoli di tessuto osservando come una collezione prende forma dall’inizio alla fine, abbiamo seguito Vivienne mentre girava la campagna contro il fracking (ovvero una tecnica per estrarre gas naturale anche da sorgenti non convenzionali) e assistito all’apertura dei nuovi flagship store a Parigi e New York.

Vivienne è sempre pronta a combattere per quello in cui crede e ad andare controcorrente e questo si riflette perfettamente nel suo attivismo e nella sua moda. Lei impiega la stessa passione e determinazione sia quando lavora nel suo showroom fino a tardi, sia quando manifesta a Westmister per la battaglia sul clima. La sua palpabile inclinazione alla ribellione e la sua morale anti-sistema sono alla base di tutte le sue azioni, che diventano immediatamente contagiose.

Gli interessi, i principi e le idee di Vivienne sono sempre state leggermente al di fuori delle aspettative del pubblico. Perciò, sin dagli albori del progetto, sapevamo che non sarebbe stato il classico film sulla moda. Proprio per questo abbiamo voluto focalizzarci maggiormente su Vivienne come persona, concentrandoci sulle sue origini, il suo attivismo e l’impatto culturale e rivoluzionario che ha avuto.

Vivienne non è solo un’artista, una fashion designer e un’attivista, ma anche il simbolo di un brand mondiale e una potente donna di successo. Vivienne ha condotto una vita straordinaria, vissuta anche in momenti di grandi cambiamenti della storia contemporanea ed è proprio per questo che speriamo che la le tematiche di rilevanza culturale giungano al più ampio pubblico possibile, dagli ex punk agli attivisti di oggi, fino a coloro che semplicemente amano i film biografici.

Durante le riprese di questo film, non c’era niente di più stimolante della storia di Vivienne. Il modo in cui ha condotto la sua esistenza districandosi in un labirinto di difficoltà finanziarie ed emotive fino a emergere, grazie alla sua forza e alla sua determinazione, come la più grande fashion designer d’Inghilterra è una vera forma di ispirazione. Per noi il messaggio più importante da trasmettere con questo documentario è che se vuoi fare qualcosa, devi farlo e non mollare mai.

Warner Bros. Pictures presenta un film di Thom Zimny e Bruce Springsteen: Western Stars, la cui uscita nelle sale italiane è prevista per il 2, 3 e 4 dicembre 2019.

“Western Stars” è la versione cinematografica dell’omonimo album di successo internazionale di Bruce Springsteen. Il film, presentato in anteprima alla Festa del Cinema di Roma, segna il debutto alla regia di Bruce Springsteen, co-diretto insieme al suo collaboratore di lunga data Thom Zimny.

Il film “Western Stars” offre ai fan di tutto il mondo l’unica opportunità di vedere Springsteen esibirsi in tutte e 13 le canzoni dell’album, accompagnato da una band e da un’intera orchestra, sotto il soffitto a cattedrale del fienile della sua centenaria proprietà.
